Local High School Sports Recaps For 5/14 & 5/13

Goshen at Warsaw
WARSAW – Warsaw had a big weekend that saw the Tigers picking up two big wins and getting themselves back into the Northern Lakes Conference title conversation. Warsaw defeated Goshen twice on Saturday, 4-3 in a game that was a continuation of a suspended contest from earlier in the season, as well as 2-1 in game two. The Tigers are now 12-8, 7-5 in the NLC.
In game two, Kyle Showley had a great game on the bump. The starter went five innings, giving up just one unearned run while striking out five. Kellan Bailey picked up a two-inning save out of the pen. Sam Justice had an RBI base hit in the first.
Warsaw now sits in third place in the NLC with two conference games remaining. The Tigers will need to win both contests and have some outside factors go their way, such as conference leaders Northridge dropping their final two games, to earn a share of the title.
Warsaw will host Concord Monday in hopes of keeping its conference championship aspirations alive.
Manchester at Blackford
HARTFORD CITY – It was a tough double header for Manchester Saturday, as the Squires dropped both games of a nonconference double header with Blackford Saturday. Manchester lost the games 8-4 and 11-5 to fall to 6-13 this season.
Gavin Martin had two RBIs on two hits in game one. The Squires also played on Friday night, beating a tough Heritage side 10-8. Ethan Espeset had five RBIs in the ball game.
Manchester switches back to conference play when it hosts Whitko Monday.
Wawasee at Plymouth
PLYMOUTH – Wawasee showed up with a dominant 7-0 shut out over conference foe Plymouth Friday night. The Warriors are now 7-12, 4-8 in the NLC.
It was a great day for Kaleb Salazar, who got the win on the mound pitching a shutout while also going 2-4. The Warriors played great defense throughout the game, something that’s hindered them at times this season.
The Warriors travel to Goshen Monday for another conference matchup.
LaVille at Triton
BOURBON – It was a tough outing for Triton Friday night as the team lost its third straight game, this time a 14-2 loss to LaVille. The Trojans are now 2-17, 1-11 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference.
Dominic Smith and Lucas Kaufman both picked up a base hit for Triton. Chase King reached via a walk and scored a run.
Triton hosts Caston Tuesday in another home game.
Whitko at Columbia City
COLUMBIA CITY – Whitko dropped a nonconference matchup with Columbia City Friday, losing 12-2 in five innings. The Wildcats are now 5-12 this season.
Max Platt scored a run and had two hits for Whitko.
The Wildcats travel to Manchester Monday evening.
Softball
Tippecanoe Valley at Jimtown
ELKHART – Tippecanoe Valley suffered a setback in a 10-2 loss to Jimtown Saturday. The Lady Vikings are now 15-7 this season.
Brayden Baney drove in a run with an RBI double. Corinna Stiles also would get an extra base hit. Stiles would score a run as well.
Tippy Valley is back in action Monday when the team travels to Northfield.
Whitko at Heritage
MONROEVILLE – Whitko battled hard but was unable to snag a nonconference win, falling to Heritage 3-2 Saturday. The Lady ‘Cats are now 5-12 this spring.
Kaycee Knutson had a big day, driving in both of Whitko’s runs. She would reach twice with a base hit and a walk. Maddie Dafforn took the loss for the Lady ‘Cats, despite having a very good performance. Dafforn struck out seven and gave up three unearned runs.
Whitko takes on Manchester on the road Monday night.
Plymouth at Wawasee
SYRACUSE – Wawasee had a great game against Plymouth Friday night, shutting out the conference visitors for a 10-0 win. The Warriors are now 7-12 this season, 4-6 in the NLC.
Elizabeth Miller had a huge game, getting on base four times and scoring all four. Miller had three hits and drove in three runs. Haylee Allen was tremendous on the mound, striking out 10 batters in six innings for the shutout win.
Wawasee hosts Goshen Monday night.
Boys Golf
Warsaw/Wawasee at Culver Academy Invitational
CULVER – Warsaw and Wawasee both had some great showings and the Culver Academy Invitational Saturday, with the Tigers finishing in second and the Warriors in sixth out of 16 teams.
Warsaw’s Cal Hoskins continued his fantastic season by shooting a 67 to pace his team. The score was top in the tournament. Ben Brander finished second for Warsaw with a 76. For Wawasee, Myles Everingham and Vaughn Dyson both shot an 81.
Manchester/Tippecanoe Valley/Whitko at Three Rivers Conference Championship
WARSAW – Three local teams competed in the Three Rivers Conference Championship Saturday, with Manchester finishing highest in third place in a tournament won by Northfield. Tippecanoe Valley finished in third, and Whitko did not have enough players to qualify.
The Vikings’ Greg Miller and the Squires’ Owen Kruschwitz were at the top of the individual leader board. Miller’s 74 tied him for second place on the day, while Kruschwitz’s 75 had him in fourth place.
Girls Tennis
Warsaw/Wawasee at Northern Lakes Conference Championship
PLYMOUTH – Warsaw finished the Northern Lakes Conference Championship tournament with a third place finish, putting the Tigers in second place for the conference’s final standings. Wawasee finishes in seventh after a seventh place tourney finish.
Warsaw’s Addie Lind and Regan Brouwer both had fantastic showings in the tournament, with both winning their respective brackets. The victories gave Lind and Brouwer automatic selections to the NLC all-conference team. Wawasee’s Kiah Farrington was voted to the team as an at-large selection.
Tippecanoe Valley at Wabash
WABASH – Tippecanoe Valley emerged victorious with a close road win, beating Wabash 3-2.
The deciding match was won by Talia Holder in No. 2 singles. Holder won the tightly contested match 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Madelyn Weaver also picked up a win in No. 3 singles.
