Huntington North Softball Sweeps Tigers

Warsaw, who is working hard to build the confidence among its younger athletes, moved to a 3-10 overall record. The Vikings, now 7-4, put their motivation to take care of business, and move on to their prom into action with solid hitting and skillful defensive play with two wins.
The Vikings had only one extra base hit in the opener and moved baserunners efficiently with 9 base hits and 12 walks while capitalizing on 3 Tiger infield errors.
The Tigers, a team who still battles while trailing its opponents, were looking up at a 14-0 deficit entering the bottom of the fourth inning when Kendyll Landis’s sacrifice grounder scored Jadelyn Walters, who was a courtesy runner for catcher Avery Sleeth, who belted a double into center field. This is a move used frequently in high school softball for pitchers and catchers who reach base, especially the latter to afford them time to put on their gear.
Warsaw outfielder Kirra Morgan singled and scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete the scoring in the 14-2 loss. Morgan was 2 for 2 at the plate. Sleeth’s fourth-inning double was the only other Tiger base hit in the early contest.
A deluge lasting almost 20 minutes running parallel to a 30-minute lightning delay made the prom-antsy Vikings tap their feet a bit while waiting to return to action. When the Tigers and Vikings were cleared to play, though, Huntington North was brutally efficient in its first three innings at the plate scoring 5, 2, and 6 runs, respectively.
The persistent Tigers shut out their guests in the top of the fourth, then livened their bats scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Warsaw infielder Kali Ousley, who also pitched in the contest, led off the fourth stanza with a home run to left field. Sleeth added her team-leading tenth double of the season in the plate appearance following Ousley’s solo dinger. Infielder Lauren Eastwood hit a solid line drive to center field to score Sleeth on the ensuing at bat.
The Tigers trailed 13-2 before the Vikings wrapped up the afternoon contest’s scoring with two more runs to punctuate their 15-2 win.
All five of Warsaw’s hits came from the top of its lineup with Mak Holder (bottom of the fifth inning), and Landis (bottom of the second inning) each adding singles.
Warsaw (3-10, 1-5 in conference) returns to Northern Lakes Conference action when it hosts Mishawaka (4-5, 3-2) today at 5:30 p.m. followed by another home game against the Wawasee Warriors (5-9, 2-3) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
