Wawasee’s Emma Yoder Tops Area Athletes At State Track & Field Meet

Wawasee’s Emma Yoder (sophomore) tossed the discus 134’3” to earn a third place finish, the best among Times-Union area athletes.
Dominic Lincoln (Manchester) finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (39.2 sec.).
Other area athletes honored on the podium were:
- Seventh place finishers Dawson Perkins (Tippecanoe Valley, high jump, 6’6”), and Gwen Howard (Whitko, shot put, 41’4.75”)
- Eight place finishers, each from Warsaw, Abby Sanner (discus, 129,1”), and Joey Rastrelli (1600-meter run, 5:00.09)
- Ninth place finishers Wade Melanson (Valley, shot put, 57’4”), and Marin Hart (Warsaw, high jump, 5’4”).
The meet featured fast times among deep, talented fields performing in near-perfect weather conditions.
Rastrelli’s impressive 1600-meter time was testimony to the level of competition. The seven runners head of her in the 1600-meter run broke the five-minute barrier topped by Huntington North senior Addy Wiley’s record-setting time of 4:38.29. Wiley also broke the state’s previous 800-meter record with a 2:06.26 winning time Friday night.
Warsaw’s Jeremy Johnson broke the 50-second barrier in the boys’ 400-meter dash (49.49) but finished eleventh.
Eleven teams broke the four-minute barrier in the girls’ 1600-meter relay with Ramiah Elliott (Indianapolis North Central), Indiana’s first athlete to win a quadruple crown at the state meet, anchoring a 3:52.56 showing. Elliot’s three other state titles among the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes (11.46 sec., 23.63 sec., and 54.75 sec., respectively) gave her a stair-step workout on the podium Friday night.
Elliott would have been a four-year state champion in the 200-, and 400-meter dashes if the 2020 track and field season had not been blacked out by COVID-19.
Another girls’ state record fell Friday when Forest Park’s Rachel Mehringer captured state gold with a 13.92-second performance.
The boys’ 3200-meter relay record set in 2011 by Lawrence North took a tumble when Columbus North finished the eight-lapper (7:37.9) for a new sate standard. 16 teams broke the 8-minute barriers in one of the state’s fastest collective fields in the history of this event.
Numerous events resulted in winning finishes flirting with state record times in Saturday’s boys’ meet.
Plainfield captured the boys’ title with 61 points on the strengths of the high jump, sprints, and sprint relays. Brownsburg finished runner-up the second season in a row with 47 team points, followed by Columbus North (43).
Manchester (6), and Valley (4) were the only area boys’ teams to score at the meet.
Indianapolis North Central (55 team points) captured the girls’ state team crown in large part due to Elliott’s unprecedented quadruple-crown performance. Noblesville (40 points), and Zionsville (32 points) placed second and third, respectively.
Wawasee (7), Warsaw (5), and Whitko (3) scored among area teams in Friday’s girls’ meet.
