Chip Shots: When Watching The Game Isn’t Enough

By Chip Davenport-

There are a few places to put your finger on the pulse on what’s going on in high school sports if watching the game isn’t enough to feed your football need. I’ll take the time to inform more than opine this morning.

State-wide high school gridiron enthusiasts should listen to the Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) Official Podcast.

Warsaw director of football operations and long-time coach Dave Baumgartner takes to the mic with former Warsaw, Northern Illinois, Indiana University and Ball State coach Ted Huber with two podcasts per week. Baumgartner and Huber possess extensive tribal knowledge of Indiana high school football past and present, and the podcasts are a treat.

The first, each Wednesday, will preview key high school football matchups throughout the state. The hosts will release a Sunday podcast to recap the results for each week all the way through the state finals.

These gentlemen aren’t afraid to predict a winner, and throughout the season you can expect guests from all over the Hoosier State because of the numerous relationships Baumgartner and Huber cultivated over many decades.

While you’re looking through past IFCA official podcasts, there are archived shows featuring year-by-year North-South All-Star game recaps, and interviews with coaches among all six classes about how they go about off-season preparation.

There is a podcast around Valentine’s Day of 2022 where two familiar coaches and their wives are featured. This, in my opinion, is one of their best podcasts.

Additionally, among archives, there is time dedicated to discussing 8-man football – in its inaugural year in the Hoosier State – with a special guest from one of Michigan’s 8-man elite programs.

This specific podcast already had me itching to see 8-man football expand in Indiana. I was stationed at an Air Force base near several tiny towns in Southern Oklahoma and Northern Texas where – 30 years ago – I had my first look at 8-man action.

If you’re reading this before 9 a.m. today, and you want some local color tune into Tiger Talk with Roger Grossman on NewsNow!Warsaw 99.7FM.

Roger packs so much so tightly in this program. He opens with some summary thoughts about Friday night’s Tiger football action, then provides high school football game results from area schools.

This program will run all the way to Memorial Day weekend, but during football season, Bart Curtis drops by the studio approximately five minutes into the broadcast, which can also be heard on the  NewsNow!Warsaw app.

Grossman’s discussions among his guest coaches shed light on their thoughts in game situations, and athletes join the show in pairs or trios following the interview with the coach. Tiger coaches interview rather well – I guess I shall opine a little bit – and Warsaw is blessed with some quick-witted coaches whose dialogue with Roger on the air tends to sound like spontaneous conversation while they’re eating goodies from Wabash Donuts.

The guest athletes in recent years have stepped up their radio appearance skills giving the quality of Tiger Talk a big boost.

Grossman then goes over the results back to the previous week’s Saturday action through the most recent contests at varsity, junior varsity, and freshman levels. If your kid had a notable performance, and he or she had sub-varsity results reported to Grossman as a matter of record, you’ll likely hear his or her name on this segment of Tiger Talk’s nearly one-hour broadcast.

The show winds up sharing the schedule of the week’s games, meets, and matches among each of the season’s sports with listeners.

Roger, with a little help from his friends (thanks for letting me borrow the phrase, Ringo Starr), has fast-tracked the posting of the show this year on the station’s website around 20 minutes after the live broadcast finishes.

High school football launched its regular season last night. The preseason IFCA coaches’ poll ranked four of Warsaw’s opponents - Concord, Michigan City and Michigan City in Class 5A, and NorthWood in Class 4A – in its preseason top 10.

Warsaw (6A), and Triton (1A) are the two Times-Union area schools receiving preseason votes in the IFCA poll, but neither are in the top 10.

Every high school football team in Indiana gets at least one game of postseason action. I’ve mentioned before I did not like this when I first moved here, but I quickly experienced a change of heart during my first football postseason in 1996.

I hope each of you looking for news, dialogue, and great on-air chemistry enjoy the offerings beyond the game I shared this morning.
