Lancers Battle Elements At Manchester Invitational

The individual highlight of the day came in the women's 1,500-meter run where Heather Plastow hit the NAIA "B" qualifying mark and broke her own school record with a second-place time of 4:43.12. Right behind Plastow was Kylie Sauder, who finished in 4:43.75 and also broke the previous school mark of 4:44.43. Anna Hulstedt ran well in the race, setting a personal best of 4:58.81.
The Grace women produced three event winners at the meet. Emma Conrad won the 100 hurdles in 16.01, while Lanae Crowe captured the discus with a toss of 132-feet-11. Mackenzie DeLong was close behind in second, recording a discus mark of 131-8. The other winning performance came from Emily McCreary in the high jump, clearing 4-9.
DeLong had a solid all-around day in the throws, placing second in the javelin (106 feet) and sixth in the shot put (37-5.25).
Emma Lehman picked up a second-place finish in the pole vault (8-8.25), and Ellie Wagoner and Caroline Kolb crossed the line in fifth (13:05.50) and sixth (13:17.23), respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase.
For the men, Bryan Hernandez-Rios captured the 800 in 1:58.73 and also finished second in the 1,500 in 3:57.66. Logan Rufenacht was third in the 1,500 in 3:59.17, and Derek O'Connor ended fourth in the 800 in 2:01.48.
Another winner for the Lancers was Isaac Brown in the javelin with a mark of 175-0. He added a runner-up finish in the long jump (20-10.75).
Ethan Brown was second in the javelin (145-10), while Josh Pike ended fourth in the long jump (20-7.75). Bryce Willard ended fifth in the discus (126-8).
In the running events, Macallister Cheek placed second in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:17.67), and Connor Kitson was third in the 110 hurdles (16.60).
Korry Hamlin produced a big personal-best to end up third in the 5,000 (15:14.62), with Dimitri Margaritidis placing fourth (15:32.94).
Several Grace athletes will compete on Monday at Indiana Tech. The full team will not be back in action until the Indiana Little State Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on April 22-23.
Grace Splits Series In Indy
INDIANAPOLIS - Grace and Marian began their baseball doubleheader with a split in Indianapolis on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
The Knights claimed the opener 7-5 before Grace won emphatically 12-2 to earn the critical split.
After Saturday’s results, the Lancers (14-21, 8-14 CL) leapfrogged the Knights in the Crossroads League standings for the eighth spot by one game. The top eight teams in the standings earn a spot in the postseason CL Tournament.
The first game was a back-and-forth affair with the Knights scoring in the later innings to pull away.
The Knights (15-19, 7-13 CL) took advantage of a fielding error by Grace in the third inning, scoring three unearned runs to grab a 3-1 lead.
Grace was undaunted, however, pushing across three runs to regain the lead. All three of the Lancers’ runs in the fifth and sixth innings came with two outs, including a two-out double by Alex Rich and a two-out single by Jake Cox.
Marian struck back with two runs in both the sixth and seventh frames to seize a 7-4 lead, which was enough for the Knights.
Chris Griffin tried to jumpstart a last-inning rally with a solo home run in the ninth inning, but Grace was unable to pull any closer.
Cox batted 2 for 3 with 2 runs, 1 walk and 1 RBI, and Jeff Pawlik had 1 hit, 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 walk.
The Lancers enjoyed a 10-run rout in the second game. Evan Etchison was sharp on the mound in his start, and the Lancers produced 12 runs on 11 hits.
The game was even at 1-1 with two innings completed, but Grace was about to take control of the game.
The third inning belonged to the Lancers. Austin Carr, Cox and Griffin each singled in a run. Additionally, Lucas Slager had an RBI double, and Patrick Danforth drove in two with a triple as Grace plated seven times in the frame.
The Lancers were not done scoring, however. Grace tacked on four more runs over the next two innings to grab a double-digit lead.
In the fourth inning, Sam Newkirk led off with a single and took advantage of a passed ball and a wild pitch to race home.
In the fifth inning, a two-out, two-run single by Josh Cosme put the Lancers ahead 12-2.
Marian was quiet down the stretch and was held to one hit over the final four innings.
Etchison earned the win, allowing one earned run with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work. Caleb Farney pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief and did not allow a hit or walk in his stint.
Danforth batted 2 for 4 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base, and Slager hit 2 for 4 with two runs and a steal.
Cosme reached base safely four times and drove in two runs, and Carr had two hits and two runs.
The Lancers are on the road next week, including a single game on Wednesday at Indiana Tech and a weekend series at St. Francis on Friday and Saturday.
Lancers Brave Adverse Weather At Trine
ANGOLA, Ind. - Grace’s men’s golf team fought through an unusually cold and windy April day at the Trine Invitational on Saturday.
The Lancers placed fifth out of 13 teams at the Zollner Golf Course, competing largely against NCAA Div. III opponents.
Blake Lawson shot a 75 to place 13th in a crowded field. He was one stroke out of a top-seven finish and four strokes off the round leader.
Noah Wright (76) and Parker Wilburn (77) finished just behind Lawson on the individual leaderboard.
Payton Kelly carded an 81, and Chase Byron (85) completed Grace’s scoring.
Tristen Dubbs (81) and Eric Haegeland (86) also competed for the Lancers in the event.
The Lancers compete again on Monday with the Sagamore Shootout at the Sagamore Country Club.
