Warsaw Cross Country Finishes Seasons At State Finals

TERRE HAUTE - The high school cross country season came to a close Saturday, and it did so with the Warsaw Tigers and Lady Tigers competing on the state’s biggest stage - albeit a muddy, sloppy one after days of rain saturated the 5K course in Terre Haute.

After winning sectional and regional championships to go along with a runner-up finish at the New Prairie Semistate, Warsaw’s girls squad finished 17th among 24 teams at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course Saturday.

Joey Rastrelli led the Lady Tigers with a 45th-place time of 19:39 among 205 female competitors.

Wini Barrett was the next Lady Tiger to cross the stripe, doing so in a 79th-place time of 20:06.

Other runners for coach Jason Fleming’s Warsaw girls team included Ava Knight (21:04), Mikayla Mimnaugh (21:07), Regan Brouwer (21:10), Elizabeth Vander Bie (21:13) and Amanda Lusinde (21:56).

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard junior Lily Cridge was the girls individual champion in 17:32, crossing the line 31 seconds ahead of runner up Nicki Southerland, a senior from Delta.

Columbus North captured the girls team state title with 79 points, while Carmel (92), Chesterton (221), Hamilton Southeastern (232) and Noblesville (254) made up the rest of the top five teams.

Homestead finished sixth, with Franklin Central, Westfield, Floyd Central and Carroll rounding out the top 10 teams.

On the boys side, Warsaw finished 24th in the team standings.

The Tigers, who won sectional and regional championships and advanced to the state finals with a fifth-place finish at the New Prairie Semistate, were led by Garrett Hall, who was 124th among 208 male competitors with a time of 17:15.

A couple of his teammates for coach Jim Mills’ squad weren’t far behind.

Others in Warsaw’s boys lineup included Luke Nier (17:18), Harrison Phipps (17:30), Tyler Swartz (17:47), Alex Schrock (18:00), Andrew Potter (18:15) and Ryun Hoffert (18:40).

Columbus North senior Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff was the boys individual champion in a time of 15:22, crossing the line a second ahead of runner-up Izaiah Steury, a senior from Angola.

The Northern Lakes Conference was represented amongst the top 20 runners in the boys 5K by Jack Moore (Northridge, 8th), Drew Hogan (Goshen, 12th) and Cole Johnston (Goshen, 18th).

Brebeuf Jesuit captured the boys team title with 78 points, followed in the top five by Hamilton Southeastern (117), Columbus North (136), Fishers (142) and Carmel.

Center Grove, Zionsville, Northridge, Noblesville and Goshen rounded out the top 10.
