NEW CARLISLE - Survive and advance.

That’s the name of the game in the postseason, and that’s exactly what Warsaw’s boys and girls cross country teams did Saturday.

After both squads claimed sectional and regional championships the previous two weeks, the Tigers and Lady Tigers punched their respective tickets to the state finals, which will be held Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

The boys 5k state finals race is slated for noon, followed by the awards ceremony, while the girls 5K event will start at 3 p.m., followed by the awards presentation.

The top six teams, as well as the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team, moved on from the New Prairie Semistate.

The Lady Tigers finished second among the 20 teams on the girls side, while their boys counterparts were fifth among 20 teams.

Chesterton was the class of the field in the girls event, winning the team title with 50 points, and will be joined at the state finals by Warsaw (134), Valparaiso (141), LaPorte (157), West Lafayette (200) and Lafayette Harrison (205).

Lake Central (223), Rochester (256), Seeger (260) and Culver Academy (282) rounded out the top 10 girls teams.

Senior Ava Knight (53rd, 20:45) and sophomore Marissa Howett (62nd, 20:56) made up the rest of Warsaw’s lineup in the 176-competitor girls race.

Defending state champion Karina James, a senior from Lowell, won the semistate title in a time of 17:55, crossing the line 40 seconds ahead of runner-up Lillian Zelasko, a junior from the host school.

Three locals runners competed in the girls race as individuals, but did not advance - Manchester freshman Kadence Fox (56th, 20:49), Triton sophomore Jocelyn Faulkner (68th, 21:02) and Tippecanoe Valley sophomore Chesnee Miller (91st, 21:19).
