Wawasee Comeback Falls Short

In a game that saw the Warriors stopped inside the RedHawk 10 with just over a minute to go, Goshen prevailed 28-25 in the regular-season closer for both teams.
Wawasee left Foreman Field Friday, Oct. 15 at 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the NLC while Goshen moved to 4-5 and 2-5.
The Warriors had the ball on fourh-and-goal at the RedHawk and called two timeouts while deciding what to do.
They could have Caleb Clevenger kick a field goal or go of the touchdown.
“He’s money,” said Wawasee coach Jon Reutebuch of Clevenger. “I put it to the kids to see what they wanted to do. Resoundingly, they wanted to win it right there.
“I don’t regret the call. We went for it on the road.”
After an incomplete pass by Lucas Ringler gave the ball over to Goshen on downs, tempers flared and both teams were whistled for unsportsmanlike penalties.
The RedHawks then took two knees to ice the win and take the War-Hawk traveling trophy.
Reutebuch was quick to praise Goshen and the RedHawks’ effort.
“They played their hearts out,” said Reutebuch. “I don’t want to take away anything from them.
“We knew were going to be in a battle. Give credit to our kids who were down 11 and came roaring back.”
Wawasee trailed 21-10 at halftime.
A 97-yard interception return for a touchdown and a Clevenger extra point with 54 seconds left in the third quarter pulled the Warriors to within 21-17.
Goshen responded with Quinn Bechtel scoring on a 9-yard run and Alex Olguin-Castillo booting the PAT of a 28-17 advantage with 9:07 to go in the fourth quarter.
A 48-yard TD run by Ringler and two-point pass from Ringler to Aidan Monds cut the gap to 28-25 with 7:27 to play.
“They made a couple more plays than we did,” said Reutebuch. “There were a couple of calls that — boy — if it would’ve went our way we’d be hoisting that trophy right now.”
Ringler, who started at quarterback, rushed for 100 yards and scored all thee of his team’s TDs with a 14-yard run at 11:53 of the second quarter being the first.
Ringler completed two passes each to Nathan Larson (37 yards), Nathan Larson (14) and Hunter Tinkey (14).
Wawasee fullback Brandon Kelly ran of 89 yards with bursts of 48, 20 and 13 on the night.
The 25 points marked a season-high output for the Warriors.
Goshen’s win was its second in a row after a five-game losing streak.
“The kids haven’t thrown in the towel,” said RedHawks coach Kyle Park. “They want to be good.”
Bechtel (89 yards) and Isaiah Park (42) led Goshen in rushing. Bechtel completed 13-of-18 passes for 138 yards and one interception. Jake Turner caught four for 75 and Brayden Hinkel five for 49.
The IHSAA postseason begins Friday, Oct. 22. DeKalb visits Wawasee in Class 4A Sectional 19 and South Bend Adams goes to Goshen in Class 5A Sectional 10.
