Warsaw Gets Big Win, Big Games From Sanner & Krebs

WARSAW – The Warsaw Lady Tigers basketball team did what it does best Wednesday night: play smothering defense. Warsaw allowed just one made field goal in each of the first two quarters en route to a 55-29 non-conference victory over Wabash to improve to 4-0 on the year.

The Lady Tigers, prone to quick starts so far this season, did just that in the first quarter, jumping out to a 12-0 lead and ending the period with a 15-2 advantage. The story of the opening quarter was senior Kacilyn Krebs, who sunk four three-pointers to score 12 of the team’s 15 points. Krebs would finish the game with 15 points and three steals.

“That’s probably the most aggressive I’ve seen Kacilyn in awhile in terms of hunting her shot,” Warsaw head coach Lenny Krebs said. “We have to keep her hunting for her shot. She knocks a few more of those down and the lead starts to get a little bit wider.”

Krebs didn’t do it entirely on her own. Senior Abby Sanner, who finished with 16 points, 10 in the third quarter, treated the Warsaw faithful to another dominant game and a team-high five steals. On a night where a fair share of other players were struggling to get open looks, Sanner & Krebs shared the load offensively, combining for 28 of the team’s first 32 points.

But the Lady Tiger defense was the story of the night. The team forced 26 turnovers and snagged 15 steals. The Lady Apaches were only able to score eleven points through three quarters before scoring 18 in the fourth against the Warsaw reserves.

“I thought we were able to put together a pretty good defensive effort all game, Krebs said. “But I’m already replaying this game in my head and thinking of some adjustments that have to be made. I want to be happy with the win but I know the next three games are going to hit us.”

Warsaw plays its next two games Saturday against Merrillville and Crown Point before taking on Penn Tuesday to wrap up its non-conference play to begin the season.

“Our young kids haven’t experienced what they’re going to over the next three games. They’re going to be thrown into a hotter fire than they’ve ever been thrown into,” Krebs said. “I want the conference season, the sectional, us to be able to say ‘we’ve been through the fire, we understand what this is about. That’s why we schedule these teams, it’s a matter of making sure they use these experiences to get better along the way.”
