ELGIN, Ill. – Grace College’s men’s basketball team won its seventh straight game to open the season after beating Judson 84-79 Tuesday evening in overtime.

Frankie Davidson played the role of hero as his basket late in the overtime period proved to be the winner. He finished the game with a team-high 24 points.

With conference play looming, Grace (7-0) is one of three Crossroads League teams to remain perfect on the season.

Grace fell behind early on Tuesday; the Eagles (2-4) jumped ahead 8-3 two minutes into the half, forcing Grace to call a timeout.

The Lancers scored the next five points coming out of the stoppage as an Elijah Malone 3-point basket tied the game at eight.

Judson and Grace traded baskets before Frankie Davidson made a layup in traffic to give the Lancers their first lead of the game at 12-10. Davidson scored eight straight points for the Lancers.

Grace and Judson were neck and neck through the middle portion of the half and, after a Brett Sickafoose triple, the game was tied at 23.

Following Sickafoose’s deep shot, Grace went cold from the field. The Lancers went scoreless over the next four minutes and missed seven consecutive shots.

Jake Wadding broke Grace’s slump with a tough shot in the paint as the Lancers tried to reel Judson back even.

The Lancers scored on consecutive possessions to close out the half, but still found themselves on the wrong side of a 34-33 score.

Grace shot 43 percent in the first half and hit on 4 of 10 shots from beyond the arc. Judson hit at a 44 percent clip and made one 3-point basket.

Grace was outrebounded 21-18 and allowed nine points off turnovers. Davidson scored 10 first half points.

Entering the second half Judson continued to attack Grace. Four minutes into the second half, the Eagles had a nine-point lead at 46-37.

The Lancers began to stiffen defensively and were able to fuel a pair of fastbreak opportunities to chip away at the deficit.

Grace used the long ball and a 17-3 scoring run to grab their first lead of the second half.

The Lancers built their lead to three before the Eagles came roaring back. Judson hit a pair of heavily contested shots to ignite their crowd and put Grace back in a four-point hole.

With five minutes remaining, Grace regained the lead. Brycen Graber made a nifty pass under the basket to spring Ian Scott for an easy basket. A minute later Graber scored himself to put the Lancers ahead 63-58.

With the game tied in waning seconds of regulation, Judson had a chance to win the game. But Malone saved the game with a last-second block on Judson’s potential winner.

In the overtime period Judson was again the aggressor in the early portion. Back-to-back three-point shots found Grace down by six in the blink of an eye.

Malone’s 3-pointer came up clutch once again as he was able to answer the Eagles’ barrage with a trey of his own.

Down by one with under 40 seconds left, Davidson hit his signature stepback jumper from the baseline to catapult Grace back in front 80-79.

Grace's defense shut down Judson on the next two possessions, and Grace hit all four of their free throws to secure the hard fought 84-79 victory.

Grace shot 45 percent from the field compared to 40 percent from Judson. The Lancers outscored the Eagles 46-40 in the paint.

Frankie Davidson led the way with a 24-point, 10 rebound double-double. Malone also double-doubled with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and he also blocked seven shots.
