Spartans FB Shuts Out Anderson For Senior Day Win

A lone field goal by senior kicker Andrew Kibler was all the difference in Saturday’s score. Kibler connected on a 39-yard try early in the 4th quarter.
The Black & Gold defense stood tall when it mattered most in Saturday’s heated rivalry game as Spartans came away with 5 takeaways. Manchester intercepted Anderson quarterback Tyson Harley four times, while also forcing a key fumble.
Playing in his final collegiate game, senior defensive back Michael Cross provided 2 of Manchester’s 4 interceptions on the day. Cross finished with 6 tackles, recovered a fumble, and also broke up a pass. Senior defensive end Jabari Webb (Villa Rica, Ga./Villa Rica) had an interception in Saturday’s game while also providing 7 total tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss. Senior linebacker Jalen Masden (Evansville, Ind./Harrison) led the Black & Gold with 11 total tackles.
The Spartans were able to seal the Senior Day victory late in the 4th quarter after junior defensive back Josue Castro intercepted Tyson Harley with 1:16 left on the clock.
For the game, the Manchester defense racked up 8 tackles-for-loss for 28 yards. MU also had 4.0 sacks.
The Spartans ended the 2021 season with a record of 3-7, 3-4 HCAC. Manchester won back the coveted Bronze Ball Trophy and has won 10 of the last 11 matchups in the series.
Spartans Place 12th at Great Lakes Championships
SHELBYVILLE – Fifth-year senior Elizabeth Lohman led another strong performance by the Manchester University women’s cross country team on Saturday afternoon.
Lohman earned All-Great Lakes Region recognition after earning a 12th-place overall finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships. Lohman posted a final time of 22:25.4 – a time good enough to bump her up to 7th on the all-time listings.
Junior Lauren Smith placed 44th overall on Saturday after clocking a final time of 23:14.2. Smith improved upon her previous career-best by 34 seconds and moved up to 13th on the all-time top 50 rankings. Fellow junior Hannah Brubaker placed 75th with a time of 23.41.8. Her time was a 14 second improvement of a previous career-best and stands as the 20th fastest time at MU.
Saturday’s race featured more than 260 runners
Hope College won Saturday’s race with a leading team score of 98. The Spartans placed 12th out of 42 teams with a score of 371.
Manchester Cross Country will now await the NCAA Selection Committee’s decisions to see who will be running at the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Richardson and Salazar Earn All-Region Honors as Spartans Place 15th at Great Lakes Championships
SHELBYVILLE – The junior Spartan duo of Thomas Richardson and Enrique Salazar led another strong performance by the Manchester University men’s cross country team on Saturday afternoon.
Both Richardson and Salazar earned All-Great Lakes Region recognition after placing 21st and 22nd overall, respectively. Richardson posted a final time of 25:24.0 while Salazar crossed the tape at 25:26.5. Richardson improved upon a personal-best mark set earlier this fall and his time on Saturday sits as the 11th-fastest all-time in Manchester history.
Sophomore Connor Havens added an 82nd-place finish on Saturday. Havens posted a time of 26:37.7.
Saturday’s race featured more than 260 runners.
John Carroll won today’s race with a leading team score of 62. The Spartans placed 15th out of 42 teams with a score of 457.
Manchester Cross Country will now await the NCAA Selection Committee’s decisions to see who will be running at the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Second Half Surge by Adrian Sinks Spartans
ADRIAN, Mich. – Adrian College used a strong second half to rally past visiting Manchester University in men’s basketball action on Saturday November 13.
The Spartans built a 38-34 lead at the intermission; however, the Bulldogs were able to outscore the Black & Gold 58-42 in the 2nd half to secure a 92-80 victory.
Host Adrian shot a blistering 64.5 percent (20-31) in the 2nd half. The Bulldogs finished Saturday’s game with 54 points in the paint, 34 bench points, and 26 points in transition.
Manchester was able to score 42 of its points in the paint on Saturday.
First-year point guard Quentez Columbus led Manchester with 18 points. Columbus finished 7-10 shooting for the game. First-year guard Ian Snelling added 16 points and 7 rebounds. Snelling shot 7-9 from the floor and went 2-2 from three-point territory. Sophomore forward Mitch Mendenhall chipped in 16 points and five boards.
Five Bulldogs scored in double figures on Saturday and were led by Connor Pelham’s double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds.
The Spartans (0-3) will look to get their first win on Tuesday night when Ohio Northern pays a visit to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. Game time on November 16 is scheduled for 7 p.m.
