Second-Quarter Surge Lifts Lady Tigers Over Valley

The Lady Tigers provided some answers for the veteran coach.
Playing on the road for the first time this season, Warsaw used a 16-0 run in the second quarter and pulled away for a 53-30 non-conference win over its Kosciusko County rival, improving to 3-0 while the Lady Vikings fell to 0-3.
“I was nervous coming in here because we were coming off a, I don’t want to use the word easy, but a pretty big margin of victory (against Manchester Wednesday), and coming into a place like this, that’s a trap,” said Krebs.
“We were on the road for the first time with a young team, trying to figure some things out, coming off a big win, and where are we going to be mentally? As a head coach, that’s not a good feeling at times. I don’t want to say I’m not confident in my kids, because by golly I’m confident, you just get nervous about the situation and how they’re going to handle it.
“That 16-0 run allowed us to push out in front of them a bit and gave us a cushion, and that was pretty much the difference in the ballgame right there, because other than that Valley played pretty even. Credit goes to Tippy Valley, they played hard today, but at the same time I thought our kids played hard and we had some different kids step up.”
A three-pointer by Valley junior Corinna Stiles cut Warsaw’s advantage to 14-12 to start the second quarter, but the visitors responded with the aforementioned 16-0 spurt and took control of the game.
The Lady Tigers went on to lead 33-14 at halftime and 39-23 after three quarters of play.
“We got off to a decent start, but we’ve kind of gone through it this year where we go through these lulls,” said Valley coach Chris Kindig. “Tuesday night against Culver Academy, they went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter and that ended up being the difference in the game.
“Again in the second quarter tonight, we backed off a little bit and they made a run, but I thought we fought pretty well in the second half.”
In the 16 minutes after the intermission, Valley was only outscored 20-16 by the Lady Tigers, who now lead the all-time series 50-7.
Freshman Brooke Winchester led Warsaw with a game-high 13 points, while seniors Abby Sanner and Bailie Stephens scored 12 points each, and senior Kacilyn Krebs chipped in with seven points.
Freshman Abbey Peterson scored five points in the win, while senior Abby Taylor and junor Zoe Bergan rounded out Warsaw’s scoring with five points and one point, respectively.
For Valley, Stiles scored 13 points, while classmate Kaydence Mellott finished with 11 points, junior Lily Ault had three points, and junior Molly Moriarty and sophomore Chesnee Miller rounded out the Lady Vikings offensive output with two points and one point, respectively.
Valley is in action again tonight when it hosts Northwestern in a varsity-only affair that tips off at 6 p.m.
The Lady Tigers host Wabash Wednesday.
Warsaw won Friday’s junior varsity game 26-25.
Viviana Zambrano led Warsaw with eight points, while Bailey Bussard paced Valley’s JV team with nine points.
