Warsaw Dominates Manchester With 48-Point Victory

It was a total team effort for the Lady Tigers, who had eight players record a point. The team was lead by senior center Abby Sanner, who tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sanner was just one rebound shy of recording a double-double before halftime.
“You can’t teach big, but if you watch the film of our first game against Norwell she had a bad habit of bringing the ball low, and their guards got their hands on it too much,” Warsaw head coach Lenny Krebs said. “We spent a lot of time in practice keeping that ball up. When she finishes well and we surround that with outside shooting, it’s really hard to defend against.”
Sanner wasn’t the only Tiger to have a big game. Junior Zoey Bergan notched nine points to go with four steals, and senior Kacilyn Krebs had 10 points and two three-pointers.
It was each team’s first experience with the new IHSAA mercy rules for basketball. When the Lady Tigers took a 35-point lead midway through the third quarter, the running clock began, only stopping for timeouts and free throws. While it gave less time for the Warsaw bench players to leave their mark on the game, there were plenty of good minutes to go around. Freshman Leila Knepp came in and made three threes to score nine points. Senior Abby Taylor came in and scored five.
“Anyone will tell you I hate the development process because I’m not a patient person. But that development is necessary to have all 10 of your players playing at the same level,” Krebs said. “I thought today was a big step in that department. We had our kids come off the bench, and we didn’t lose any intensity. Leila came in and got after it. Nobody saw her coming in and doing what she did and I’m so proud.”
For Manchester, it was tough for the Lady Squires to get anything going all night long. Coming off a 37-32 loss to Lewis Cass the night before, fatigue started to set in early, and points were hard to come by. Aliala Atienza led Manchester with six points and five rebounds. Brookelynn Buzzard added five points and two boards.
The team’s leading scorer, senior Ainsley West, was held scoreless.
“Tonight we played a great Warsaw team. The girls battled and played hard,” Manchester head coach Allison Kauffman said. “We are continuing to get better and are excited for our first conference game on Saturday.”
“Manchester plays hard. Coming off of a back-to-back is a tough thing to do,” Krebs said. “I admired how hard they played in that situation. I told Coach Kauffman that’s how you build some toughness. We wanted to make fatigue an issue, and we took advantage of it.”
Manchester plays its next game Saturday against Maconaquah, while Warsaw takes on Tippecanoe Valley Friday night.
“I think we have a ton of upside, I think our room for growth is tremendous and we have a really high ceiling right now,” Krebs said.
