Triton Uses Defensive Effort To Beat Manchester

Both teams struggled to score points in the first quarter of this one. Halfway through the first quarter, Manchester held a 6-2 lead. The Trojans would respond in a big way, as the team used a 21-2 run to take a 23-8 lead that it would never look back from.
“Our first game on Wednesday, we came out with some fire but we did not come out with it tonight, Trojan head coach Kennedy Krull said. “It’s a good thing they found it because it could have been really ugly if they didn’t. It’s just one of those things where you have to come out swinging, and we didn’t tonight, but finding it definitely helped us.”
Leading the charge for Triton was junior guard Kinsey Atkins. Atkins went nuclear in the second quarter, scoring seven straight points to fuel the run Triton used to pull away from the Lady Squires. Atkins finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals. She was one of four Lady Trojans to record three or more steals. Senior guard Taren Yates also filled up the score sheet, registering 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
“Kinsey is one of those players that doesn’t just force steals, but instantly gets on the ball when one of her teammates does,” Krull said. “She’s one of those players that always wants the ball in her hands, and if I can get all five of my players playing like that, we’ll be in good shape.”
On the other side, Manchester struggled to take care of and score with regularity once again. The Lady Squire faithful were treated to another dazzling performance from senior Ainsley West, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. She was also a menace on the defensive side of the ball, gathering three steals and three blocked shots. Brookelynn Buzzard had six points, the second most on the team, before fouling out. The Lady Squires outscored Triton 23-20 in the second half, but just couldn’t get out of the early hole.
“They caused a lot of turnovers that led to us not being able to execute offensively,” Manchester head coach Allison Kauffman said. “The girls finished strong with a good 4th quarter push, but it wasn’t enough.”
In the JV game, Manchester was able to grab a 35-24 win. Molly Schannep led the Lady Squire scorers with 14 points. Leading the scoring charge for Triton was Danica Kuntz with nine.
Next up for Triton is a matchup with Argos Tuesday, while Manchester takes on Lewis Cass the same night.
Wawasee Gets Another Win, Moves To 2-0
SYRACUSE – Wawasee won its second straight game to begin the season Saturday night, getting a 46-31 victory over Prairie Heights.
Leading the Warrior scorers was Jada Carter, who had 18 points. Kennedy White just barely missed a double double, finishing with eleven points and nine steals.
Next up for Wawasee is a game against Fairfield Tuesday.
