Triton Treks To Adams Central For Sectional Title Game

The Trojans earned a come-from-behind 22-13 win Friday, Oct. 29 at Northfield and will face visit Adams Central in the IHSAA Class 1A Sectional 44 title game. Kickoff at Rick Minnich Field is slated for 7 p.m.
The Trojans trailed the Northfield Norsemen 13-6 going into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Cole Shively threw one touchdown pass for Triton while sophomore Anthony Schuh rushed for 86 yards and one TD and junior Trace Schuh ran for 56 yards and one TD.
On defense, junior Amari Snyder made five tackles, two interceptions and forced one fumble and covered one in the first half and made two fourth-quarter interceptions.
Shively made eight tackles (one for loss) with one forced fumble and one recovery and junior Josh Lemler made three tackles, forced one fumble and recovered one.
Northfield outgained Triton 234-171 in total yards. The Trojans ran for 160 yards and the Norsemen passed for 92.
“The whole game was just a muddy mess,” says Triton coach Rodney Younis, who is 50-102 in his 14th year. “The first half we struggled moving the ball offensively except on one drive.
“Defensively we played pretty solid the whole game. We made a few minor adjustments (at halftime) and in the second half we maintained the ball, caused turnovers, got our opportunities in the ‘Red Zone’ and on two possessions scored touchdowns.
“Our boys wanted the game.”
With the win, Triton snapped a four-game losing streak and put itself in a position to hoist a trophy.
“We got ourselves to the sectional championship,” says Younis. “Anything can happen in a one-game scenario.”
Standing in the Trojans’ way an Adams Central squad ranked No. 2 by the Indiana Football Coaches Association and No. 3 Associated Press.
“They’re a very good team,” says Younis of the Jets. “They’re solid all-around — on offense, defense and special teams.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us.”
Adams Central routed visiting Southwood 56-0 Oct. 29. The Michael Mosser-coached Jets led the Knights 49-0 at halftime on the way to the tea’s sixth shutout of 2021. Ryan Black passed for 91 yards and two TDs. Nick Neuenschwander ran for 86 yards and one TD. Alex Currie gained 47 receiving yards with one TD. Total tackle leaders were Keegan Bluhm (5) and Blake Heyerly (3.5).
The Jets have won nine straight since a 21-19 Week 2 loss at Eastside.
AC is 4-0 at home. Triton is 2-4 on the road.
The Jets score 47.9 points per game (sixth in the state regardless of class) and yield 5.1 (first in the state). Trojan norms are 16.7 on offense and 23.6 on defense
The winner of the Triton-Adams Central game will meet the survivor of South Adams (9-2) at Union City (6-4) in regional seminal play. Triton would be the home team against either. Adams Central would go to South Adams or host Union City.
Adams Central is 4-0 against Triton in the past 35 years. The Jets beat the Trojans 38-14 on Oct. 30, 2020.
Triton’s 2021 opponents are a combined 62-39 while Adams Central foes are 56-58.
Since 1985, Triton is 24-36 in the postseason with sectional titles in 2007, 2008 and 2018. Since 1981, Adams Central is 92-37 with 21 sectional crowns (tied for 12th in Indiana prep football history) — the latest in 2019.
