KOKOMO, Ind. - Grace’s women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a win on Wednesday.

The Lady Lancers recovered from a first-half deficit, muscling past IU Kokomo 69-58 on the road.

Grace’s defense impressed, holding the Cougars to 37 percent shooting while also outrebounding IUK by 14.

Kiersten Poor led the way for Grace, producing a game-high 24 points. She made 4 of 8 from the 3-point line to go along with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

Grace started the game with issues in controlling the ball, which allowed the Cougars to take an early lead.

The Lady Lancers committed five turnovers during a two-minute span. IUK took advantage with a 9-0 run to open up a 13-5 lead.

But Grace refused to be rattled. The Lady Lancers slowly whittled away at the Cougars’ cushion, and a late basket by Kaylee Patton cut the lead to 17-15 by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, 3-pointers from Poor, Maddie Ryman and Kensie Ryman gave Grace’s offense a jolt. The Lady Lancers finally regained the lead with 2:13 remaining in the half thanks to another triple from Poor.

From that point on, Grace never trailed again. The Lady Lancers went into halftime with a 33-29 advantage. After losing the ball seven times in the first quarter, Grace only had one turnover in the second.

The third quarter belonged to Grace. The Lady Lancers maintained a healthy lead, growing to as large as 12 points late in the period. Grace turned the ball over nine times in the quarter, but the team made amends by shooting 7 of 10 from the floor.

Grace held a double-digit lead for much of the fourth quarter, but the Lady Lancers needed to withstand one final push by the Cougars.

Grace went scoreless for a three-minute segment midway into the fourth quarter; IUK rallied to within seven at 60-53 with 2:20 remaining.

But a timely 3-pointer from Maddie Ryman ended the Cougars’ run. IUK was forced to foul over the final 90 seconds, and Grace made six free throws to ice the win.

Karlee Feldman registered her second double-double of the season, tallying 17 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists.

Maddie Ryman had 10 points and three boards, Kenzie McMahon had four points and eight rebounds, and Patton added four assists and three boards.

Kensie Ryman buried a pair of triples off the bench, and Carissa Wiegman scored five off the bench.

“What I really liked from tonight’s game was how well we defended on the road for four quarters. This team has a lot of resiliency,” said Grace head coach Dan Davis. “We still need to clean up our turnovers, but it never affected our mentality to focus on the next play. This team is made up of grit and resilience, and it showed tonight.”

The Lady Lancers will end the week with a weekend tournament in Michigan, playing Siena Heights and Lawrence Tech.
