KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Grace’s men’s soccer team took care of business in its opening game at the 2021 NCCAA National Championships.

Grace shut out Oakland City 2-0 on Tuesday to begin pool play. Martim Cardoso and Ze Maria Goncalves scored the goals during Grace’s win.

The Lancers (12-9-1) outshot OCU by a commanding margin of 22-5 on Tuesday.

The final match of pool play for Grace is Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Judson. Grace can win its pool and advance to the national semifinals with either a win or a draw against Judson.

The first half was fast and physical with both teams pushing aggressively for the opening goal.

As the half progressed, Grace’s skill on the ball and in possession began to manifest itself.

Midway into the half, Cardoso had a golden opportunity. After a leading pass from Ethan Vigario, Cardoso had a 1-on-1 with OCU’s goalkeeper, but his poked shot went wide of the mark.

Ten minutes later, Grace had two shots in rapid succession. Dan Allen’s header off a corner was saved, and Jules Peycelon’s long-range attempt also forced a leaping save.

With eight minutes left in the half, Grace found its breakthrough goal. Goncalves served a cross in front of the goal, and Martim Cardoso finished off the cross from close range for a 1-0 lead.

Grace nearly doubled its lead a few minutes before halftime. Tyler Brueckman tried a one-time volley from outside the box that beat the goalkeeper but bounced off the goal post.

The Lancers carried their one-goal advantage into halftime. Grace limited OCU to just one shot attempt in the first half.

Grace, on the other hand, shot eight times and also had three corner kicks.

The Lancers resumed their offensive advantage to begin the second half. Cedric Brenneman fired a shot that was a few feet wide of the net. Not long after, TJ White drilled a low blast that was parried to the right of goal.

Grace had no trouble generating chances after halftime. The Lancers shot 14 times with six of those being on target.

The insurance goal for Grace occurred in the 77th minute. Cardoso broke away for a shot at OCU’s goal. His attempt was blocked, and the rebound was calmly placed into the open net by Goncalves.

Matteo Conci saved the only shot on goal by Oakland City to preserve the shutout victory. He was defended well by starters Flavio Cruz, Allen and Korry Hamlin.

Overall, 22 players saw the field for Grace with 10 of those players recording a shot attempt.
