The Warsaw Tigers girls’ basketball team hosted their Northern Lakes Conference opener against a NorthWood Panther squad who came in with only win, and an average of 29 turnovers per game. Warsaw knew exactly what to do, employing an aggressive 1-3-1 defense from the opening tip-off on their way to a 54-21 win.

“Mentally we were in great shape,” Tiger head coach Lenny Krebs said. “We turned up the heat with that 1-3-1 early. We created some easy baskets.”

Lots of easy baskets in fact. The Tigers scored 28 points in the paint including numerous layups on the fast break off steals. Northwood’s 35 turnovers led to 27 Warsaw points. The Tigers 18 offensive rebounds resulted in 18 second chance points.

The Tigers scored 16 points in each of the first two quarters holding the Panthers in each respective quarter to one and two points for a 32-3 halftime lead.

Despite the great start Warsaw sputtered in the first four minutes of the third quarter when Krebs and crew used the opportunity the big lead afforded them to work on a different defensive scheme.

“I was frustrated with our start in the third quarter,” Krebs remarked. “We tried to employ the triangle and two. Then we put our team back in the 1-3-1, instead of the passive defensive set.”

The Tigers went on a 13-1 run when they returned to their more effective 1-3-1 zone to finish the third stanza in command 45-13.

Warsaw pushed its lead to 51-15 to transition into the IHSAA mercy rule’s running clock near the 3:30 mark in the final period, and the NLC’s battle of the big cats ended with a 54-21 win pushing the Tigers to 6-2 overall, and 1-0 in conference action.

NorthWood’s (1-6, 0-1) statistical leaders were Joselyn Edwards (11 points), Hannah Chupp, and Karis Bennett (3 pts each). Kailey Martin and Olivia Oman added two points apiece to round out the scoring. Claire Payne, a 6’2” freshman post player with a bright future at NorthWood grabbed six rebounds, blocked a shot, and snatched three steals.

The guests shot 8-26 (31%) from the field including 4-12 (33%) from three-point range. They hit one of two free throw attempts on an evening where the Tigers only committed three fouls.

NorthWood is a young squad with four juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen. The squad, under the helm of former Triton coach Mark Heeter, has height (six players ranging 5’10” to 6’2” will return for at least another one to three years), and Heeter is the right coach to develop young talent to return their program to its usual caliber on the hardcourt.

Every Tiger dressed for varsity action made it onto the floor last night. Warsaw’s winning effort was led by seniors Kacilyn Krebs (16 points, three steals), Abby Sanner (14 pts, eight rebounds, three thefts), and Bailie Stephens (12 pts, eight boards, four steals).

Zoe Bergan played outstanding defense for the victors, picking up four steals and four caroms to go with two points. Freshman guard Abbey Peterson was also one of five Tigers with three or more steals. Leila Knepp (five pts, five rebounds), Abby Taylor (three pts), and Brooke Winchester (two tallies, six rebounds, one steal) completed Warsaw’s offensive and defensive output.

The Tigers travel to Mississenawa Saturday for a noon JV tip-off followed by varsity action.

The junior varsity Tigers also picked up a 49-27 NLC-opening win. Junior guard Viviana Zambrano led the scoring effort with 16 points followed by 6’0” freshman Makia Lukas’s ten points and nine rebounds. Mia Jones (eight pts, ten boards), Kelsey Cox (six pts), Joey Rastrelli (five pts), and Braylie Chastain (two pts) also scored for the Warsaw JV squad.
