MENTONE – Before the Mentone Egg Festival concluded Saturday night with its annual variety show, Chamber President Rita Price Simpson announced the winners of several contests.
Winning the title of Miss Mentone 2014 was Elizabeth Salazar. Winner-up was Nichole Peconga.
As contestants, each teen had to raise money for community projects. Peconga said she did a car wash and yard sale, and during the festival she sold hot dogs, nachos and water. She also sold raffle tickets.
Salazar had a bake sale and car wash before the festival. She also participated in corn hole, the “duck pond” game and sold hugs.
Price Simpson said the chamber had a quick meeting Saturday and since the two girls did so well in raising money, the chamber decided to give them more than planned. As Miss Mentone, Salazar received $500 and Peconga received $300.
“It feels great,” Salazar said after winning. “It’s amazing.”
She said she participated in the pageant because it’s not what the contestants look like or how popular they are, it’s about raising money for the community.
Salazar, 15, will be a Tippecanoe Valley High School sophomore in the fall. Peconga, 14, also is a student at TVHS.
Miss Mentone 2013 Kayleigh Craig passed the crown over to Salazar.
Prior to the naming of Miss Mentone, Price Simpson announced the winners of the Mr. Rooster and Miss Chick contest.
Mr. Rooster is Cruz Nunez, 6, son of Octavio and Kelly Nunez. Miss Chick is Malaynie Costello, 5, daughter of Ryan and Addie Costello.
The Mr. Rooster and Miss Chick contests are open to children ages 3 to 6. Contestants have to have a parade entry in order to compete.
Three babies competed in the Cutest Baby Contest – Cooper Perkins, Brant Lee Castle and Lacie Rager. Rager won.
Any child between the ages of newborn and 2 may enter the annual baby contest. The baby who brings in the most penny votes wins. The winner receives a trophy, sash and Radio Flyer® wagon.
Together, the three babies this year raised over $300. The money will be donated to Helping Hands food pantry in Mentone.
