SYRACUSE – The cause of a barn fire late Monday in Syracuse is still under investigation.

Turkey Creek Fire Territory Fire Chief Mickey Scott said his fire department got the call from Kosciusko County Central at around 11:15 p.m. Monday. Several passers-by reported the blaze at 8546 N. Syracuse-Webster Road, Syracuse.

The 30-foot by 40-foot barn is owned by John Roberts. It was a wood frame with metal around it. Scott said there also was a lean-to on the south side of the barn.

No injuries were reported.

The barn was engulfed when Turkey Creek Fire Territory arrived to the scene. The Milford and North Webster fire departments, along with Turkey Creek, provided tanker trucks to put the fire out; a dry hydrant south of the barn near a pond provided water for the tankers.

Scott said there was a lot of machinery in the barn. Cattle were in a pen to the east but none were lost to the fire.

There were 35 to 45 firefighters on the scene, which was cleared at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. American Red Cross provided a fireman’s canteen at the scene.

Scott estimated damage to the contents and barn at approximately $100,000.
