County Commissioners this morning rejected the only bid received for work on bridge 278 after Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden said it was higher than expected.
Tilden recommended turning down the $586,000 bid from La Porte Construction Co. Inc. for the bridge on Front Street over Turkey Creek in Syracuse, saying it was way over the engineer’s estimate. He said he was surprised that only one firm bid after six companies picked up plans. He will put the project out to bid again at a later date.
Commissioners also approved a change order for bridge 18, on CR 300N over Tippecanoe River – a project they learned in May will be delayed for a year by order of U.S. Fish and Wildlife because the river is home to an endangered species of mussel. And they approved an engineering agreement that covers bridges 209, on Country Club Road, and 123, on Packerton Road, which will both receive work next year.
They later approved three rezoning recommendations from the Area Plan Commission: 8/10ths of an acre north of  Warsaw from agricultural to light industrial, at the request of Medcast Inc.; a tract near Old 15 south of Milford, from agricultural to residential, to accommodate a request for a multi-family residential dwelling; and the rezoning from agricultural to agricultural II of a combined tract of land on CR 875W in Etna Township, owned by Nifong Farms Holdings. The rezoning is a modification of Nifong’s request approved in May.
