Richard T. “Dick” Leiter, 86, died Aug. 5, 2014, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw.
He was born Dec. 5, 1927, in South Bend, to J.D. and Bessie Mae Crist Leiter. On Aug. 4, 1950, in Warsaw, he married Josephine L. Holloway, who died July 20, 2009.
He was a 1945 Sidney High School graduate. He entered the U.S. Army March 30, 1946, at Camp Atterbury. Tec 5 Richard T. Leiter was honorably discharged Aug. 12, 1947, at Fort Lawton, Wash.
He was a lifetime Warsaw resident. He was a truck driver for Tinkey Oil Company for 19 years, retiring in 2001; he was a lifetime farmer; and he formerly owned and operated Leiter’s Junkyard. He was also owner of Leiter Donut Wagon in the 1950s. He enjoyed bowling. He was a builder, owner and driver of stock cars in the 1950s, and he was inducted into the 2014 Warsaw Speedway Hall of Fame.
Surviving are three sons: Tommy and Chuck Leiter, both of Warsaw; and Terry Leiter, Brooksville, Fla.; a foster daughter, Ruth (and spouse Jim) Guffy, Warsaw; a brother, David (and spouse Jackie) Leiter, Etna Green; two sisters, Phyllis Forbes, Wabash, and Norma Moyer, Akron; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son, Eddie Leiter, who died May 19, 1981; a sister, Maxine Hughes; and a brother, Robert Leiter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 E. Sheridan St., Warsaw, with Pastor Rick Cooper of Touch of Life Church, Warsaw, officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Warsaw’s American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126. Burial is in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
