Jane E. Smith, 73, Chapman Lake, Warsaw, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Aug. 4, 2014, at her residence.
She was born June 6, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo., to Albert and Lillian Fischer Hampe. On June 22, 1963, she was united in marriage to Peter Smith, who survives in Warsaw.
They celebrated 51 years of marriage in June.
She graduated from the Woerner School in 1952 and Cleveland High School, both in St. Louis. She attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, graduating in the class of 1963 with a degree in physical education. While attending Miami, she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, serving as chapter president in 1961 and 1962.
She was director of women’s physical education at Oakwood High School, Dayton, Ohio, in 1964 and 1965 and then served as secretary in the guidance department from 1985 to 1990. She was also the girl’s varsity tennis coach from 1985 to 1990.
Her memberships include the Junior League, a women’s philanthropic organization, Chicago, Ill., and Dayton; the woman’s board of the Children’s Medical Center, Dayton; the board of directors of Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake; Tippecanoe Lake Country Club; and Venice Golf and Tennis Club, Venice, Fla., where she pursued her love of tennis and golf. In addition, she was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, and Church of the Good Shepherd, Venice, Fla. Her life was devoted to being a wonderful friend to many, as a sister, as a wife and mother and grandmother.
She is also survived by a daughter, Julie (and spouse Chad) Smith Cannon, Dayton; a son, Scott (and spouse Amy) Smith, Chicago; a brother Richard (and spouse Heide) Hampe, St. Louis; and five grandchildren: Ben, Emily and Jack Cannon and Ella and Jackson Smith.
A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, with the Rev. Corinne Hodges as the celebrant. Ennichment will be in St. Anne’s Columbarium.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
