NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester High School varsity boys tennis team hosted and fell 4-1 to potential sectional opponent Peru.
The No. 1 doubles team of junior Noah Cain and senior Branden Scott scored the Squires’ lone win, as the duo beat junior Braden Bales and sophomore Carson Ray 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
In all, three of the five matches went to a third set.
At No. 1 singles, Manchester senior Connor Eichenauer rallied from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win the second 6-3. He fell 6-1 to senior Logan Primerano in the third set, however.
In No. 2 singles action, Peru junior Jose Morales topped Manchester junior Max Karg 6-3, 6-3, while at No. 3 singles Peru senior Jack Zvers beat Manchester senior Brayton Spann 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 2 doubles, Peru’s duo of senior Andrew Rice and junior Kameron Graham beat Manchester junior Matthew Pegg and sophomore Heath Diercks 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
“We had our chances, but needed to finish some crucial points,” said Manchester coach Joel Eichenauer. “Peru’s addition of a strong exchange student at No. 2 singles really boosted their team strength and chance to compete with us. Luck or not, Jose Morales was a nice pickup for their team.”
The Squires and Tigers could meet again in the sectional in October.
Manchester, now 4-1 on the season, is in action again Tuesday at Bluffton.
