Moving their Northern Lakes Conference match to Warsaw’s Racquet Club due to the weather, the host Warsaw girls tennis team downed Wawasee 5-0, Thursday.
Snapping their five-match losing streak, the Warsaw Lady Tigers also picked up their first NLC victory, improving to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
For Wawasee, it’s drought in the NLC continues, falling to 0-4 in the conference and 1-6 overall.
Warsaw’s Sarah Boyle (No. 2 singles), Rachel Alexander (No. 3 singles) and the No. 2 doubles team of Abbi Baum and Athena Schlitt all cruised to wins in straight sets.
At No. 1 singles, Jacqueline Sasso nabbed a 6-3 opening set victory over Katy Ashpole, but had to fight off her Wawasee counterpart in the second, winning a 7-3 tiebreaker.
At No. 1 doubles, Warsaw’s Camille Kerlin and Anna Hall were 6-1, 6-2 victors.
Warsaw is right back on the courts tonight against Fort Wayne Concordia and Wawasee next match is Monday at West Noble.

At home against North Judson Wednesday night, the Triton girls tennis team posted a 5-0 win. Twins Kaelyn Mason and Kylie Mason each won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and 3 singles, respectively. The Lady Trojans will be at Saturday’s DeKalb Invitational.

Thursday in Warsaw
The 17th-ranked Warsaw boys golf team was upset by Columbia City Thursday at Stonehenge Golf Club. In the three-team meet, Columbia City led the pack with a 157, followed by Warsaw’s 158 and Huntington North’s 176. Earlier this season, Columbia City also outshot Warsaw in an 18-hole tournament at the Hall of Invitational in Peru, finishing with a 330 to Warsaw’s 337. In the nine-hole match, Warsaw’s Will Petro, Reid Cameron and Ryna Cultice each shot a 39. The 1-1 Tigers will be at Saturday’s Wawasee Invitational at South Shore Golf Club in Syracuse.

Playing through the elements Thursday, the Wawasee boys golf team defended its home turf, shooting a 159 at South Shore Golf Club, defeating Whitko (182) and Manchester (208). Despite the wind and wet course, Wawasee’s Tristen Atwood shot an even-par 36 and teammate Jeffrey Moore finished his round at 37. For Whitko, Danny Zawlocki had the low score of 42 and Connor Eichenauer led Manchester with a 45. Whitko will be back at South Shore for Saturday’s Wawasee Invitational, then takes on Manchester and Northfield at Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester, Tuesday.

The Tippecanoe Valley baseball team opened its Three Rivers Conference campaign with a 7-2 loss at Northfield, Wednesday night. In the loss, Gavin Bussard had two hits and Drake Hyden hit a first-inning, two-run homer.  Valley hosts its own invitational Saturday, taking on Knox and Rochester.

Exploding for 12 runs in the third inning, the Triton softball team crushed LaVille 21-3 in the five innings Thursday in Bourbon. In the Northern State Conference win, Halie Zimmerman had doubles and four RBIs, while Brycelyn Garbison and Heather Stichter also had doubles, with Stichter also recording three RBIs. The 9-3 (4-1 NSC) Lady Trojans are back in conference action tonight at Culver.
