In the past 37 years that Richard McCleary has been Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 715, they have visited and hiked the Grand Canyon eight times.
The first time was in 1978, when they hiked with full gear from the North Rim down to Phantom Ranch and back to the North Rim. That was the last time they hiked in the Canyon with full gear.
Troop 715 has hiked from rim to rim, rim to Phantom Ranch and back from both sides, and has hiked across the Tonto Plateau on the very primitive Tonto Trail.
This year, Boy Scouts Chase Madsen and Parker Kelley, with leader Neil Meeks,  hiked from the North Rim across the Canyon to the South Rim.
Meeks is the Cubmaster of Pack 3450 in North Manchester (he accompanied Troop 715 for this Adventure).
Hiking the south side down to Phantom Ranch and back up again were 715 Boy Scouts Alex Jordan, Jacob Hawn and Dillon King. They were led by Leaders Joe Hawn, Scott McClintock and David King. Due to the extreme heat encountered during both hikes and the toll it took on some of the hikers, both groups took extra time to complete their hikes.
Scout Leader and Eagle Scout from Troop 715, Rick McCleary, plus Scouts Devin McCleary and Jerod Mershimer (all from Troop 107 in Westfield) made several trips down into the canyon to assist some the hikers out. The only Scouts running the last 100 yards out of the canyon were Chase and Parker. Also joining the 715 group and hiking rim to rim on the trip were Eric, Susan, Eric II and Carl Meeks (Scouts from Cincinnati, Ohio).
During the two-week trip, they also did a white-water raft ride on the Arkansas River, hiked from 8,000 feet to over 11,000 feet to see the lower Blue Lake in the San Juan Mountains near Ouray, Colo., took a tour of a gold mine, panned for gold, went swimming in a hot springs pool, and visited Arches National Park.
The Scouts completed nine nights of tent camping.
