Students at Mentone Elementary who read all 20 Young Hoosier Award nominees for the 2003-04 school year received special recognition certificates and Hoosier winner T-shirts: Linzi Ousley, Leah Sponseller, Rebekah Lowe, Raven Landry, Dean Landis, Jordan Satoski and Audi Bastardo. The Association of Indiana Media Educators selects 20 books as nominees and students must read at least five to be eligible to vote. Thousands of students across Indiana voted and the winner was "Ghost Soldier" by Elaine Alphin.
   Sonlight Preschool, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, held its graduation May 18. The Preschool visited Papa John's in Warsaw for a tour, pizza and drinks.

Jane Scott, Warsaw Community Development Corporation project assistant, Eugena Fulkerson and 13-month-old Evan Lancaster promote this year's Strawberry Festival June 10 on the Courthouse lawn. Evan will participate in the Diaper Derby. The Derby was held for the first time during the Strawberry Festival in 1987 with 40 participants, and there were 77 the second year. Other activities are pie judging and pie eating contests and a family bike cruise. Strawberry shortcake and strawberry milkshakes will be sold throughout the day.
   Steve Maynard accepted the position of supervisor of delivery and mail at the Warsaw Post Office. He was formerly postmaster at Mentone for two and a half years and has been employed by the postal system for the past 10 years in various departments. Warsaw postmaster is Robert Douglas.

50 Years Ago
David Dombek, a 1961 graduate of Warsaw High School and now a junior at Grace College, will portray Abraham Lincoln in the drama "The Rivalry" to be presented in the Grace Little Theatre May 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9. Others in the cast include Tom Gillespie, Jackie Akers, Evelyn Brubaker, James Poyner and Harold Rager. Donald Garlock is the director and Ralph Gilbert the technical director.
   Wayne Carlin and Doug Gregory represent the Pierceton Cubs who captured their sixth consecutive county high school crown; for the 10th time in 11 years Pierceton won the Kosciusko County High School track and field meet. The Cubs rolled up 61 and 1/2 points; Larwill was second with 32 and 1/2. Leesburg, North Webster and Sidney all tied for third with 22. Leesburg captured the junior high title over Pierceton and Talma.

Three Mentone High School students who were awarded first places in their divisions in an instrumental and solo contest at Nappanee March 18 will represent their school in the state contest at Valparaiso April 1: Barbara Creighton, clarinet; Forrest Meredith, baritone; Dortha Deckard, saxophone. They are under the fine direction of Instructor Walter Bowers. Miss Marjorie Long is pianist.
   George Coy, Sherman and Main streets, reported the theft of a large milk can to the police. Mrs. Ike Hire, Winona Lake, reports that on Friday evening residents were able to see both ends of the rainbow. One end dripped directly into the lake while the other end cut off in a clump of willows on the opposite side of the lake. Buck Smith, local barber equestrian, was seen riding out near Winona Lake the other day.
